The summer of 2020 will forever be remembered as, well, the summer that never was. But that hasn’t stopped Roxanne Potvin from releasing her latest single “Jump In,” the perfect summer jam that can invigorate us now and for years to come.

Having honed her home recording skills on her previous two releases — full length For Dreaming and EP All It Was — the pandemic didn’t really hinder Ottawa-based Roxanne’s musical vision. Working remotely with her trusted crew consisting of drummer Olivier Fairfield, bassist Mark McIntyre, keyboardist Jesse O’Brien and guitarist Nick Zubeck, Potvin created “Jump In” as an anthem for anyone pondering making a fresh start.

#NewMusicFriday: Mallory Chipman & The Mystics – Aquarian

Aquarian-streaming

“There is a difference between an artist experimenting for the sake of freedom and one who is so educated and confident in their diverse toolkit that they combine the elements together in the best possible way. Mallory Chipman & the Mystics are unarguably the latter. (8/10)” Exclaim!

#NewMusicFriday: Joe Nolan – Drifters

Joe Nolan-Drifters [2020] COVER

“In the midst of the cacophony of noise that constantly fills modern life, Nolan’s turn toward simple arrangement and minimal accompaniment [on Drifters] offers welcomed respite. Over ten tracks Nolan mines the trials, travesties, and triumphs of life’s journey; deep in that mine Nolan strikes a vein of sequestered gold.” Americana Highways

Monica Lee releases new single “Only One”

Monica Lee-Only One [Single Art]

Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Monica Lee will release her new album Farewell on July 24, but today she shares the first single, “Only One,” on all digital platforms. The lyric video premieres exclusively at Roots Music Canada [click logo below]. A classic country ballad with echoes of Patsy Cline, “Only One” is an uplifting moment on Farewell, inspired by Lee mustering the courage to propose to the man she would marry.

That’s just a taste of the range of emotion conveyed on Farewell, which ultimately celebrate our ability to survive. From a musical standpoint, it’s all brilliantly reflected in Farewell’s seamless blend of country, blues and jazz.

“These songs are all about relationships,” Lee says. “The album was sequenced to start with a feeling of letting go, then move through the various relationship stages and finally end with letting go once again.”

Farewell marks the end of a long creative journey that included Lee needing to adapt to using hearing aids, but on the other hand it’s the beginning of an entirely new musical identity. The late John Mann of Spirit of the West once compared Monica Lee to Joni Mitchell and it’s easy to agree after hearing her ability to balance confessional subject matter with observations of everyday life.

SCREENING ROOM: Jerry Leger “Read Between The Lines”

Jerry Leger‘s new video for “Read Between The Lines” is a brilliant piece of Rotoscope animation by Karly McCloskey. The song also happens to be my favourite from Jerry’s latest album Time Out For Tomorrow. Watch it here or at these links!
